Video: Wenger & BBC journo offer huge update on Arsenal’s £20m deal

By on June 19, 2016

There have been some huge developments in the Jamie Vardy to Arsenal saga today with both Arsene Wenger and BBC journalist David Ornstein offering updates on our proposed £20m deal.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last three weeks you’ll know that Arsenal have been pursuing Vardy with widespread reports claiming we’d triggered his £20m release clause at the start of the month.

The Daily Mail reported that the 29-year-old had agreed personal terms over a three-year deal worth £120,000-a-week after holding face-to-face talks with Wenger and it looked like he was heading to the Emirates.

However, a last ditch move from Leicester saw the deal stall as they offered him a four-year contract on improved terms and Vardy flew out to the Euro’s to contemplate his future.

We’ve been patiently waiting for the striker to make his decision but it appears he’s now decided to stay with Leicester as Wenger told Japanese TV that from the information he’s been given, it looks like Vardy will be remaining at the King Power Stadium.

You can watch the video below but on Vardy, Wenger said:

“Jamie Vardy is, at the moment at Leicester,” the Arsenal boss told Japanese TV.

“And, on what I know, he will stay at Leicester.”

BBC journalist David Ornstein, who’s known as Arsenal’s mouthpiece in the press, has also provided an update on Twitter after saying that while there has been no final decision made, Vardy is set to reject Arsenal and stay at Leicester.

Interestingly, Ornstein also says that Arsenal won’t be improving our offer, which to me indicates that the club may feel it’s the contract offer that could be swaying his decision.

Arsenal are understood to have offered a three-year deal worth £120,000-a-week, while Leicester have supposedly put a four-year deal worth around £100,000-a-week on the table, meaning they’ve actually offered him more security.

Anyway, it looks as though we’re set to miss out on Vardy and I’ve said from the very start I wasn’t bothered either way. He’s only had one good season in a team set up to play to his strengthens and Leicester play VERY differently to Arsenal.

New Arsenal signing given squad number

Therefore, I have my doubts as to whether he’d be a success here and he’ll also turn 30 in 6 months time, so I personally won’t be too disappointed if he has chosen to snub our move. The important thing is we’re in the market for a top class striker, so let’s just hope Arsene moves for his alternative targets quickly….
