President hints at Arsenal deal for 35-goal hitman
Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has hinted that Alexandre Lacazette will be allowed to join Arsenal as long as we meet their asking price.
Lacazette has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates for some time and Aulas confirmed last summer that Arsenal had submitted an opening £29m bid for the striker.
The French international decided to stay at Lyon but speculation in recent weeks has suggested Arsene Wenger will renew his interest in Lacazette after watching him plunder 35 goals in just 44 appearances this season.
And now the French clubs president has claimed that the 25-year-old could finally join the ‘club of his heart’ this summer if their asking price is met.
Aulas doesn’t name Arsenal but given our strong interest last summer and the fact he says Lacazette had the option to join the club in question last year then I think it’s safe to assume he’s talking about us.
Aulas is quoted as saying by the Metro:
‘Alex had a good option with a club that is in his heart [last summer],’
‘If the club of his heart is able to match our demands then things will go well. Otherwise, it will depend on our other business.
‘But if any players feel that this club is not big enough for them, we will look for others who are just as strong but have the right mentality as well’
The Mirror are reporting that it’s Atletico Madrid who are leading the race to land Lacazette in a £50m deal but they weren’t interested last summer so it isn’t the Spaniard’s that Aulas is alluding to. Plus, Atletico are currently banned from signing new players this summer.
I’d be shocked if Wenger wasn’t looking to sign Lacazette as we desperately need a top class frontman and he’d fit in perfectly at the Emirates. However, our lack of Champions League football could be a stumbling block.

The striker has made it clear he wants to be playing in Europe’s elite competition so he’d be reluctant to join Arsenal if we can only offer him the Europa League. Let’s pray Middlesbrough do us a favour on Sunday….
