Arsenal in pole position to sign Barcelona midfielder
According to a report in the Express, Arsenal are in pole position to sign Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan this summer as Arsene Wenger gears-up to revamp his squad.
The boss ended speculation over his future after signing a new two-year extension last week and reports suggest he’s going to be backed with a huge transfer kitty this summer.
While Wenger insisted last night that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil won’t be leaving this summer despite not signing new contracts yet, the boss continues to be linked with a number of attackers.
The Express are citing a report from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo that claims Wenger is ‘determined’ to sign Arda Turan and has accelerated his plans to land the Barcelona midfielder.
Turan has struggled to establish himself at the Nou Camp since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and he’s fully expected to find a new club this summer as he looks to secure more regular football next season.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with Turan in recent months and the Express’s report says we’re now in pole position to complete a deal for the Turkish international over the coming weeks.
The 30-year-old has predominantly played on the wings throughout his career so it will be interesting to see where he fits in to Wenger’s new 3-4-2-1 system if we do end up buying him.
My worry is that the boss sees Turan as a potential replacement for Sanchez or Ozil. No doubt he has plenty of quality but we haven’t seen the best of him for a couple of years and he’s nowhere near the level of our star duo.

I’d see him as a solid squad player who would give us depth behind the likes of Sanchez or Ozil but I must admit I’d be underwhelmed if Turan is the player Wenger has lined-up to replace either of them.
