Arsenal hoping to secure deal to sign £18m midfielder

According to a report in the Metro, Arsenal are hoping to see off competition from the likes of Everton to sign highly-rated Genk midfielder Sander Berge this summer.

Arsene Wenger is expected to be extremely busy this summer as he looks to reshape his squad in to genuine title contenders after missing out on the top four last season.

While a new goalscorer is a priority, it looks like the boss is also keen to strengthen his midfield options and Berge has now emerged as a potential target.

The 19-year-old has just enjoyed an impressive campaign with Belgian outfit Genk with his ball-winning and passing skills in the middle of the park catching the eye of several European clubs.

The Metro are citing a report coming from the Mirror that claims Arsenal are hoping to beat Everton, Sevilla and Monaco to the signature of the Norwegian international this summer.

Understandably, Genk don’t want to sell the teenager on the cheap so the newspaper suggests it will take a fee of £18m to land Berge – but that valuation doesn’t appear to have put off Wenger.

Berge is a defensive midfielder so his arrival would cast doubt over the future of Francis Coquelin – who’s struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting eleven.

Let’s see how things develop but Berge is most likely viewed as just a squad player and he won’t improve the starting eleven if we do end up signing him.
