Arsenal plot bid for £30m forward as Wenger eyes 3rd summer signing

By on July 17, 2017

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to launch a move to sign Celtic forward Moussa Dembele if we’re forced to cash-in on Alexis Sanchez this summer.

Our Chilean super star dropped a huge hint that he’s looking to leave after telling reporters over the weekend that he wants to play in the Champions League – something we can’t offer him this season.

It’s looking increasingly likely that the 28-year-old will refuse to sign an extension so we’ll be faced with a difficult decision as to whether we force him to see out his final year and potentially lose him for nothing or cash-in this summer.

It would be a HUGE risk to let Alexis go in to the new season without signing an extension and I personally don’t think the club can allow a £50m+ asset to go for nothing in 12 months, so a move during the closing stages of the window is on the cards.

The club insist we won’t sell to a domestic rival so with Bayern Munich out of the race our best chance of preventing Sanchez from joining Man City is Paris Saint-Germain.

Obviously Sanchez’s departure would leave a huge hole in the squad and The Sun claim Wenger has set his sights on Dembele as the man to fill the void.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a sensational campaign north of the border last year having scored 32 goals for Celtic following his move from Fulham last summer and the newspaper says he’s valued at around £30m.

That sort of money seems reasonable for a player of his potential but I really don’t see how Dembele can be regarded as a replacement for Sanchez as he’s nowhere near the same level.

Obviously it will be extremely difficult to replace Alexis if he does go but I hoped Wenger would be a little more ambitious than Dembele – who’s only had one great season in a very poor Scottish league.

The French youngster would be a fine addition to the squad but he wouldn’t be a first team regular as he’s a striker so would be behind Alexandre Lacazette and probably Danny Welbeck in the pecking order.

If we were successful in signing Dembele, he’d become our third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac.
