Arsenal & Liverpool open talks over signing Spanish attacker

By on July 22, 2017

According to a report in the Express, Arsenal have joined Liverpool in opening talks with Real Madrid over the potential signing of attacker Lucas Vazquez this summer.

Arsene Wenger is keen to further strengthen the squad after only signing Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette so far this summer and the boss is hoping to add to his attacking options.

We’ve been strongly linked with the likes of Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez in recent weeks but are struggling to agree deals for the pair so it looks like Wenger is exploring other options.

The Express are citing a report from Diario Madridista that claims Arsenal have made contact with Madrid to express their interest in signing Vazquez but we’ve stopped short of submitting any formal offer.

Zinedine Zidane is a big fan of the 26-year-old’s but with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Isco and Karim Benzema all ahead of him in the pecking order, Vazquez has struggled for regular game time.

The winger is a product of the Madrid youth academy but the 3-time Spanish international started just 12 La Liga games last season, although he did still manage 2 goals and 9 assists despite his lack of regular action.

Wenger can offer Vazquez more minutes if he was to make the move to Arsenal and he’d be a useful addition to the squad if we could get a deal agreed with the Champions League winners.

However, we aren’t the only club in the running as the Express claim Liverpool have also been in touch with Madrid about signing the attacker so we’ll face stiff competition from our league rivals.

It sounds like we only have a fleeting interest in Vazquez right now and no doubt he’s only regarded as a fall-back option if we can’t land Lemar or Mahrez, so I’m not too worried about Liverpool’s interest or missing out just yet.
