Arsenal linked with £62m swoop for prolific La Liga hitman
According to Calciomercato, Real Madrid are ready to sell Karim Benzema for £62m to make room for Kylian Mbappe and Arsenal are among the clubs showing a keen interest in signing the striker.
As we reported earlier today, speculation coming from Marca claims Madrid have agreed a sensational £161m deal with Monaco to sign Mbappe with the teenage forward set to sign a six-year deal at the Bernabeu.
Madrid have already sold Alvaro Morata to Chelsea but Calciomercato are citing a report from Diario Gol that suggests the La Liga giants are also planning to cash-in on Benzema in order to make room for Mbappe.
The Spanish outlet claim Madrid president Florentino Perez believes Benzema’s best days are behind him and is now ready to sell the French international if someone meets his £62m valuation.
Predictably, Arsenal are named in the report as one of the clubs showing a keen interest in signing Benzema with Arsene Wenger supposedly eyeing the 29-year-old as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
The Express reported last week that the boss may make a move for Benzema if Sanchez was sold this summer and on the face of it he’d be a great signing as he’s one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.
However, I just don’t see where he’d fit in to our starting eleven given we’ve already broken our transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette.
Sanchez playing on the left of a front three along with Mesut Ozil and Lacazette leading the line up front makes sense but where exactly would Benzema play if Alexis goes? He can’t play out wide and I don’t see why Wenger would buy Lacazette only to leave him on the bench.
Therefore, I can only come to the conclusion that these latest reports are just using Arsenal’s name and linking us with Benzema without any foundation whatsoever.

Wenger has always been a fan of Benzema’s and no doubt we’ve tried to sign him in the past but that ship sailed a long time ago so I’d be stunned if anything came of these reports this summer.
The former Lyon hitman may very-well leave Madrid over the coming weeks but there is virtually no chance he’ll be joining Arsenal….
