Bundesliga midfielder talks-up Arsenal move after catching Wenger’s eye

By on August 1, 2017

According to the Express, Eintract Frankfurt midfielder Aymen Barkok has admitted he’s flattered by Arsenal’s interest and would jump at the chance to play with a top European club after catching Arsene Wenger’s eye.

The boss has confirmed he’s looking to further strengthen our squad as we’ve only signed striker Alexandre Lacazette and left-back Sead Kolasinac so far this summer.

Wenger knows we need more reinforcements if we’re to not only break in to the top four but also mount a serious title challenge next season and we’ve been linked with a number of players in recent weeks.

One of those touted as a target for Wenger is Barkok as the Express cite reports from Germany last month that claimed Arsenal have launched a move to try and sign the 19-year-old from Frankfurt.

The midfielder has now admitted that he’s flattered to have attracted interest from a club like Arsenal but insists no formal offer has been put on the table and he feels he still needs to prove himself in Germany.

When quizzed about Arsenal’s interest, Barkok is quoted by the Express as saying:

“To be honest, I learned from the press. I have not received a request yet. But, of course, I am flattered.

“It would be great to play in the Europa League or Champions League. But that is still a long way away. I have to prove myself in the Bundesliga.”

The teenager joined Frankfurt’s youth system four years ago and broke in to the first team last season when he made 18 appearances in the Bundesliga to help his club secure a comfortable mid-table finish.

Barkok is a central midfielder by trade but he’s also capable of playing on the right wing while he’s already represented Germany at under-16 and under-17 youth level.

If Wenger did decide to formalise his interest in the youngster this summer then he would almost certainly be viewed as one for the future as I don’t see him commanding a regular first team place anytime soon.
