Team news: Arsenal boss confirms star duo could miss Chelsea + Wilshere update
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has offered a team news update ahead of our tough trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Wenger’s usual 9am Friday press conference didn’t take place this morning due to the fact our Europa League clash with Cologne didn’t finish until gone 11pm last night.
The manager therefore offered some thoughts to the media at his post match press conference last night and he revealed that Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil are slight doubts to face Chelsea on Sunday.
The duo were among seven first team regulars who missed last night’s win over Cologne and we all thought Ramsey and Ozil were also rested along with the likes of Cech, Xhaka, Welbeck and Lacazette.
However, it appears they were actually carrying knocks as Wenger has confirmed Ramsey and Ozil wouldn’t have been available for selection last night due to unspecified injuries.
The boss says the duo will need to be assessed ahead of our trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend but thankfully he’s confident they will be passed fit for the game.
We have two days less recovery time than Chelsea after they played their Champions League clash on Tuesday night but Wenger is confident that shouldn’t be a problem.
We saw Jack Wilshere make his long-awaited comeback in an Arsenal shirt last night as he made an impressive late cameo appearance against Cologne and Arsene says the run-out should help boost the injury-plagued midfielder’s confidence.
Wenger told Arsenal.com:
on Wilshere playing against Cologne…
Yes, it is good for him. You will see that it will give him more confidence and you could see that he still needs competition, Jack.on this who didn’t feature in midweek…
We have to see about Ozil and Ramsey. I think they should be alright. All the others could have played against Cologne.on the squad being fresh for Sunday…
Yes, I believe in three days we can recover. Overall, that should not be a problem.
Let’s pray Ramsey and Ozil are passed fit as it would be a huge blow if the pair were to miss out trip to Chelsea. We desperately need to come away with a positive result and we need our best players available in order to do so.
