Arsenal Confident Of Sealing £23.5m Double Deal Next Week
With another week gone by and no new arrivals through the Emirates door, many Gooners are getting rather frustrated at the lack of action at Arsenal. Well fear not Gooners, as the Telegraph are reporting that Arsene Wenger is confident of tying up two major deals next week with the signings of Julio Cesar and Gonzalo Higuain.
A new goalkeeper has been touted as a priority this summer after some questionable displays from Wojciech Szczesny last season and it seems the man Wenger wants is Brazilian No.1 Julio Cesar. The 33-year-old is available at a cut-price due to Queens Park Rangers relegation last season and the fact the west Londoners now need to get Cesar’s hefty wages off their books.
The Telegraph claim we’ve considered Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Stoke’s Asmir Begovic but with the pair likely to cost in excess of £10m, the boss has decided he doesn’t want to spend too much of his £70m budget on a goalkeeper and has elected to go for the cheaper alternative in Cesar.
It’s understood that Arsenal will open formal negotiations with QPR after the Confederations Cup finishes this weekend with an offer of £1.5m expected to be agreed between the two clubs. Cesar has the option to go back to Italy with Roma, but it’s believed he’d prefer to remain in London where his family is now settled.
This would be a fantastic signing if we can pull it off, especially if we can sign him for just £1.5m. He’s vastly experienced, has played in the Premier League and as we found out at the Emirates last season, he’s a superb goalkeeper on his day. He’d also be able to pass his wisdom onto Szczesny and at 33, he wouldn’t pose a real long-term threat to the young Pole’s position as future No.1 at Arsenal.
As well as the signing of Cesar, the Telegraph give us another small update on the Higuain saga and they claim that we’re confident of sealing a £22m deal early next week. I’m growing tired of writing about this transfer, so all I can say is fingers crossed we can finally close the deal because I’m not sure now much more of this we Gooners can take!
If we can sign Higuain and Cesar for a combined £23.5m, I think that would represent some excellent business by Arsenal. Then we’d just need a defensive midfielder, a utility defender and another versatile attacking midfielder and we’d have a superb squad heading into next season.
Next week could be the week we finally see some action in north London…..
