Fabregas To United? Get Real, Here’s Why It’s NEVER Going To Happen!
So Manchester United and their fans seem to think they have a realistic chance of luring Cesc Fabregas back to the Premier League from Barcelona this summer.
The champions are said to have tabled an opening offer of around £25m and David Moyes said earlier today that he hoped to hear within a day or so how things were progressing.
I’ve never taken their move for Fabregas seriously as I don’t think they have a cat in hells chance of signing him. Why am I so confident? Here’s why:
For starters, here’s what Fabregas said back in December 2011:
‘Apart from Arsenal and Barcelona, I don’t see myself playing anywhere else,’ he told Sky Sports News.
‘I will definitely be going back (to Arsenal) whenever I have time to watch games and to see the guys, and you never know in the future, why not?
‘I hope I will stay here for a very long time, and maybe even retire him, but why not? In life, you can never say never, and if there is one place to go back to, it is Arsenal for sure.’
Quite clear-cut wouldn’t you say. Now before you throw RVP’s name at me, Fabregas and Van Persie are very different people at different stages of their careers. Robin left Arsenal at 29 because he was desperate for medals before he retired. Cesc still has 6+ years left in him, has won 7 trophies already at Barca (as well as numerous with Spain) and he ACTUALLY does love Arsenal, unlike the Dutch fraud.
Arsene Wenger confirmed this week that we have a buy-back clause written into Fabregas’ contract. The precise details of the clause are open to conjecture, but the mainstream view appears to be that we have first option to buy him should Barca decide to sell, and we can do so at a fixed fee of £25m. Furthermore, we also have a 50% sell-on clause, so if we turn down the chance to re-sign him (we wouldn’t), we’d take 50% of any fee above the £30m Barca paid us two years ago.
The boss also confirmed that Fabregas had decided to remain at the Nou Camp for another season.
“At the moment, Fabregas has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona.
“We have the clause in the contract so we would be on alert but at the moment that’s not something we’re after. Wenger is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
Wenger still keeps in regular contact with his former skipper so I think he’d be one of the first to know if the midfielder had decided he wants a move, particularly given the fact we have first refusal to buy him.
Now I’m not saying Cesc is going to join Arsenal either. In fact I don’t think he’ll leave Barcelona at all this summer, an boss Tito Vilanova claimed earlier this week that Fabregas had informed him he’s happy at the club:
“It’s normal to receive offers for our players from other teams. We have very good players, and we have to be very happy to have Cesc with us.
“I am conscious that he has received offers for other teams, but I had a conversation with him and he let me know that we wanted to stay here, and his dream is to be successful here.
“So he is not thinking about any other club, not even for money or for minutes, even if he knows all the competition he has here with Xavi, Iniesta and also this year against Sergi and Roberto, but he told me that his dream is to be here. I’m not worried at all.”
This is what makes United’s bid so intriguing. They’ve made a bid. We have first option. Therefore Barca would have to inform us once a bid comes in to see if we’re interested in activating our clause. Arsene hinted that we’d be on the case if Cesc wanted out, so it’s highly unlikely we’d pass up the opportunity to re-sign him, so I really don’t see where this United interest is going.
If this wasn’t enough, Barcelona vice president Josep Bartomeu has just come out today and stated that the club have no intention of selling Cesc:
“Barcelona can assure [fans] we won’t listen to any offers for Cesc (Fabregas). It is totally ruled out, he’s not for sale.” Bartomeu is quoted as saying by the Independent
Arsenal are in the box seat if Fabregas is going to leave; we have the money to compete with United now in terms of wages, etc, both his former boss and current boss claim he’s not looking for a move, Barcelona have categorically stated he’s not for sale and the player would only leave Barca for us anyway.
So why all the fuss about Fabregas joining United….it ain’t gonna happen!
