The 5 Players Wenger Should Spend His £90m ‘Warchest’ On
It was widely reported that Arsene Wenger had £70m to spend at the start of the summer and following the sales of Vito Mannone and Gervinho, that figure has grown by a further £10m to around £80m.
Reports today also link Lukas Podolski with an £11m move away from the club, which if true, takes Wenger’s potential transfer budget beyond £90m.
The boss confirmed he’ll be active in the market during these last 10 days and we’ve been linked with a whole host of big names. Assuming he’ll have the full £90m to reinvest, here are the five players I’d love to see the boss sign before the window closes:
Karim Benzema – Real Madrid – £40m
The 25-year-old Frenchman is a real ‘dream’ signing for me. He’s exactly the type of striker we’ve been crying out for, we know Wenger has a soft spot for him and if Madrid want to sell to raise funds for Suarez, then I’m hoping we can get this one done.
Benzema has been getting a hard time from the Bernabeu crowd recently and a Sky Sports reporter just said he’s asked to leave. If this is true, I hope we’re at the front of the queue for him. Reports in recent days suggest we’re in talks and we know Wenger is keen to buy a marquee striker.
Angel Di Maria – Real Madrid – £25m
Reports this morning suggest we’re in for Di Maria and Madrid are prepared to sell for £25m, with the player also said to have asked to leave Madrid. With Podolski (possibly) on the way out, Di Maria could slot in on the left wing. Swapping Podolski for Di Maria would certainly be an upgrade if you ask me and the Argentine would be a real hit at the Emirates.
Julio Cesar – QPR – £2m
If we want a new goalkeeper like the papers keep suggesting, then I think we should snap up Julio Cesar. He’s proven in the Premier League, would be a bargain at around £2m, he’d jump at the chance to join us and QPR are desperate to get his wages off the books. There’s talk he’s close to joining Benfica so we’d have to act fast. A more expensive alternative would be Asmir Begovic but he’ll most likely cost around £12m-£15m.
Micah Richards – Man City – £8m
A boyhood Gooner, big, strong and versatile, Richard’s would be a great addition. He could play right back or centre back and has plenty of experience in the Prem. He doesn’t get in at City and reports suggest they are prepared to sell for £10m. I reckon we could get him for £8m. His injury record is a concern though, so a more than able back-up option would be Sakho from PSG. He’s also available for around £10m and has asked to leave the club to get regular game-time.
Geoffrey Kondogbia – Sevilla – £15m
A beast of a defensive midfielder, Kondogbia has a reported buy-out clause of around £15m. Monaco are also sniffing around but I think the Frenchman would be an ideal signing for The Arsenal. He’s well over 6 foot and has drawn comparisons to a certain Patrick Vieira. If he becomes half the player Paddy did, we’d be laughing. At 20-years-old he could solve our defensive midfield position for years to come. Or at least until we sold him to City, United or Barcelona!
So that lot would set us back around £90m. Clearly we won’t sign ALL five of them, in fact in reality we probably won’t sign any of them, but we can all dream.
The big two are Benzema and Di Maria. If reports suggesting they want out of Madrid are accurate, we have a chance. I don’t think they’ll sell Benzema without having a replacement lined up and the most likely is Luis Suarez, so Liverpool could play a huge part in this.
10 days left Arsene, these are my ‘dream’ signings. Don’t let me down!
Who would you like the club to buy? Who would you spend £90m on?
