TEAM NEWS: Latest On Flamini, Gnabry, Wilshere, Arteta & Zalalem
It’s Capital One Cup week and Arsenal welcome London rivals Chelsea to the Emirates tomorrow.
The boss has been speaking to Arsenal.com today and gave them the latest team news ahead of the game.
Midfielder Mathieu Flamini was forced off early on against Crystal Palace on Saturday and Arsene Wenger has confirmed the Frenchman will undergo a scan today to assess the damage to his groin. There is no indication as to how long he’ll be out for but he’ll certainly sit out the visit of Chelsea tomorrow.
Jack Wilshere has also been carrying a little ankle problem but the boss claims he’s fit to play, but he won’t be appealing against Mikel Arteta’s harsh red card from the weekend as the Spaniard wouldn’t have played anyway.
The League Cup usually sees some of our younger players given a chance to impress and many have been eager to see the likes of Thomas Eisfeld and Gedion Zalalem in first team action. However, the talented youngsters will not feature against Chelsea due to injury.
Serbe Gnabry is also a slight doubt but the boss did confirm that the German will start if he’s fit along with Ryo Miyaichi and Isaac Hayden, but Emmanuel Frimpong is still short of match fitness.
Here’s the latest team and injury news:
on Mathieu Flamini…
He has a scan today and then we will get the results as to how long he will be out. It doesn’t look like a bad muscle injury but honestly it’s too early to give you a precise answer. It’s a groin injury.
on Jack Wilshere…
Yes, he is OK to play.
on Mikel Arteta…
He is suspended for one game, so I will not appeal.
on other injuries…
Serge Gnabry has a problem, he got a kick on the ankle. He will be assessed tomorrow. After that we will decide who plays and who doesn’t play. I will decide [on Tuesday]. Eisfeld has a back problem.
on Gedion Zalalem…
He is not yet available. He had a knee problem. He is back in full training but he has not played yet. He will play 45 minutes with the under-18 team later this week.
on Emmanuel Frimpong…
He is still short of competition. Isaac Hayden will be involved, Ryo and Gnabry if he’s fit.
Chelsea will also field a weakened side but unfortunately they are expected to play the likes of Juan Mata, Willian, David Luiz and Demba Ba, so we’re going to be up again an experienced team.
Home advantage should count for something though and I’m confident we’ll see the boys put in a decent display. You can see my predicted starting Arsenal eleven here.
What would be your preferred team be for the game?
