Why This Would Be £18m VERY Well Spent By Arsene

By on November 18, 2013

It’s been a better-than-expected season so far. We sit top of the Premier League table and also top a very tough Champions League group with two games to go, so it really couldn’t be going much better at the Emirates.

We’ve done all this whilst having to cope with a crippling injury list so with the likes of Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still to return to the squad, you’d think we should be relatively content heading into the January transfer window.

However, I think it’s fair to say that there’s one area of the squad that certainly needs improving, and that’s up front. We are extremely thin in the striker department with Olivier Giroud currently the only viable option available to Arsene Wenger, so if we can bring in another striker in January we’ll be in excellent shape for the second half of the season.

We’ve been linked with a whole host of frontmen in recent weeks but one that really caught my eye were reports claiming we are lining up a bid for Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko.

The Bosnian international was on Wenger’s radar before he joined City from Wolfsburg in 2010 and he’s praised him in the past, so we know the boss is a fan.

The 27-year-old is struggling to secure first team football with Manuel Pellegrini opting to go with Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo up front, and he’s recently voiced his concern at his lack of action in the run-up to the World Cup.

The Daily Star claim Dzeko will look for a move in January and will be available for £18m. If true, I hope we go all-out to land him as he would be a superb addition to the squad.

He has the touch and vision to play the lone role up top in Arsenal’s formation, and I actually think he a superior finisher to Giroud. He’s not got the physical presence the Frenchman has, but he more than makes up for it in other areas.

Dzeko also has vast experience in the Premiership and in Europe, so should have little trouble settling in. I really think it would be £18m well-spent if we could persuade City to sell to us.

And that brings us on to the main problem here. I think Dzeko would be up for the move but City are unlikely to favour selling to a title-rival, particularly in mid-season. The Star also claim that Borussia Dortmund are sniffing around so we will most likely face stiff competition for his services.

But fingers crossed we could get a deal done as I’d make us title favourites if we could get Dzeko on board this winter.

What do you think? Would Dzeko be a good addition?
