RATINGS From Arsenal’s 2-0 Win Over Southampton
Arsenal secured another hard-fought victory with a 2-0 win over Southampton this afternoon. The visitors made life difficult with their high intensity pressing game, but Olivier Giroud got both goals to move us four points clear of Liverpool.
Here are my ratings:
Szczesny 8/10 – Made a couple of very good saves to deny Lallana and Rodriguez in the first half and commanded his area well throughout the game. Looks to be getting better and better.
Sagna 7/10 – Was a real outlet down the right, in fact he spent more time in the oppositions half than his own during the first 45 minutes. Crossing wasn’t like it was against United but still a solid display.
Gibbs 7/10 – Also got forward well and kept the dangerous Southampton attack in check.
Mertesacker 7/10 – Back in the team and his calmness was important today. Won the penalty that sealed the win when he was hauled back and kept Lambert quiet.
Koscielny 8/10 – Superb display from Kos. Made countless interceptions and clearances and his pace was vital in keeping out the opposition.
Arteta 6.5/10 – A bit sloppy in the first half. At one point he lost possession in midfield which led to the visitors almost scoring, but Szczesny saved the day with an excellent stop. Was much better in the second half though and put himself about, including a crunching challenge on Wanyama. Was subbed late on as he looked like he picked up a knock.
Ramsey 7/10 – Not the all-action stuff we’ve got used to seeing but was still effective. He almost scored one of the goals of the season with a lovely flick that hit the post.
Wilshere 6.5/10 – Was in and out the game and you can tell he’s still working his way back to full fitness.Almost scored early on though but his chip hit the inside of the post and he also put a header straight at Boruc.
Cazorla 6.5/10 – Another below par display by his high standards. He showed flashes of brilliance but wasn’t really in the game enough.
Ozil 6.5/10 – Like Cazorla, he drifted in and out the game. He was particularly effective when he drifted out on to the right side in the first half but his influence faded. He did pop up with a decent shot in the second half but it was straight at Boruc.
Giroud 8/10 – Great work rate to put Boruc under pressure and was rewarded with the opener, then kept his calm to tuck away the penalty. He also put himself about up front and won countless headers. MOTM
Subs:
Walcott 6.5/10 – Finally back in action and went close with a powerful drive.
Rosicky 6.5/10 -Added a bit more pace to our attacks and useful on the ball.
Monreal (N/A)
So another vital win under our belt and with Liverpool drawing 3-3 with Everton, we now move four points clear at the top of the table. Marseille up next on Tuesday.
