Draxler Update + Arsenal Set To Hold Talks Over €8.5m Defender

By on January 26, 2014

Another day and another update on our pursuit of Julian Draxler with reports today suggesting that we are yet to agree a fee with Schalke, while we are also believed to be set to hold talks with Frankfurt for defender Sebastian Jung.

Widespread reports on Friday and Saturday suggested that we were closing in on the signing of Draxler after ‘sources’ in Germany claimed we had agreed a fee for the 20-year-old.

However, Goal are suggesting this evening that contrary to those reports, we have NOT yet agreed a deal as Arsenal have so far only offered a maximum of £30m while Schalke are holding out for the full value of the players buy-out clause – which is set at £37.5m.

They also claim that the Germans want to secure a replacement before agreeing to let the attacking midfielder leave this month, with Tottenham’s Lewis Holtby believed to be their top target.

Draxler is understood to be keen on making the move now rather than waiting for the summer and further talks will take place with Arsenal officials over the next few days to see if a deal can be reached.

I really hope we can pull this off before the window closes on Friday night because we’re sure to face much sterner competition in the summer and we could use him during the second half of the season. Fingers crossed we hear good news soon.

Goal are also reporting that senior Gunners officials will fly out to Frankfurt to discuss the signing of right-back Sebastian Jung with Wenger viewing him as a potential replacement for Bacary Sagna.

The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season and is yet to come to an agreement over an extension, and he has plenty of interest from the likes of Monaco, PSG and Inter Milan.

With the stalemate on-going, it makes sense we’ll look at our options and it seems we’re keen on Jung. The 23-yea-old is valued at around €8.5m (£7m) by Frankfurt but this is probably a deal we’ll look to conclude in the summer if we can reach an agreement with the Germans.

My preference would be for Sagna to extend his stay at the Emirates but the longer this drags out the more it looks like he’ll be off in the summer, which would be a huge loss. Lets hope Wenger can persuade him to commit his future to the club.
