RATINGS: My Ratings From Arsenal’s 2-2 Draw With Southampton

By on January 28, 2014

The worst 45 minutes of the season were followed by 10 crazy minutes that saw three goals scored in quick succession. Overall, we were pretty lucky to come away from St Marys’s with a point after being totally dominated in the first half and were fortunate to only be 1-down at the break. A Mesut Ozil inspired second half saw us improve but it wasn’t enough to claim all three points.

Here are my ratings:

Szczesny 7.5/10 – Was suspect for the opener but otherwise he did well. Made some excellent stops over the course of the game and did well to deny Rodriguez when he was through on goal.

Sagna 7/10 – Lovely cross found Giroud for the equaliser but he played his part in Southampton’s second as he failed to cut out the long ball.

Mertesacker 7/10 – Was never a free kick against him in the build up to the opening goal but Per put a shaky opening 30 minutes behind him and improved as the game went on.

Koscielny 7/10 – Made a superb block to deny a goal-bound effort from Gallagher in the first half and almost got himself on the scoresheet with a close range effort.

Monreal 5/10 – I thought he was poor tonight, particularly in the first half. He was caught in possession in his own box, was culpable for the opener and a poor clearance should have led to a second goal.

Arteta 6.5/10 – Took a while to find his feet and you could tell he’s been out a while, but improved later on in the game and did well to set Monreal up with a chance.

Cazorla 7/10 – Lovely finish for the second goal but I was disappointed he didn’t offer more help to Nacho at the back.

Flamini 5/10 – Sent off for a reckless, needless two footed challenge which ended our hopes of pushing for a late winner. Very poor from the experienced Frenchman.

Gnabry 6.5/10 – Lively early on but faded as the game wore on and was eventually subbed. He’s played a lot of football so looked a little tired.

Ozil 8/10 – Sensational second half display. Was unplayable at times and he was easily our biggest attacking threat. A stunning run ended with his deflected shot hitting the bar – what a goal that would have been! More of this please Mesut.

Giroud 6.5/10 – Didn’t do a great deal other than score his goal, which was a fine finish from a Sagna cross.

Subs:

Chamberlain 6/10 – On for 20 minutes and didn’t do much.

Gibbs N/A – Only on for a matter of minutes.

Podolski N/A – Felt sorry for him as he only saw the last 3 minutes.

A disappointing night made even more frustrating with the news that Aaron Ramsey is set to miss the next 4-6 weeks after a set back in training. However, we’re still top and hopefully the boss brings us a surprise before the deadline.
