RATINGS: Arsenal 1-1 Wigan: Poor Display But Got The Job Done. Just
Apologies for the late post but I’m still recovering from my day out at Wembley. It was a nervy afternoon that ended with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Wigan to book our place in the FA Cup final.
We were well below our best and some may say we once again froze on the big occasion, but we got the job done. Just about. Here are my ratings, from what I can remember about the game:
Fabianski: 8/10 – Made himself the hero with two excellent penalty saves. He really is going to be missed when he leaves this summer. Hopefully we send him off with an FA Cup winners medal.
Sagna: 7/10 – Not his most adventurous display and once again his crossing wasn’t up to scratch at times, but gave his all.
Mertesacker: 7/10 – Uncharacteristic mistake from the BFG as his poorly timed challenge almost cost us the game by handing them a penalty, but he made up for it with an excellent headed goal.
Vermaelen: 7.5/10 – I thought he looked assured at the back and didn’t really put a foot wrong.
Monreal: 6/10 – Another disappointing display from the Spaniard before he was stretchered off with another injury.
Arteta: 6/10 – Once again, he looked leggy and pedestrian in midfield and just couldn’t get anything going. Scored his penalty in the shoot-out but surely his days are numbered as a first choice regular next season.
Ramsey: 7/10 – Was great to see him back and his energy was important in midfield, but you can tell he’s short of match practice.
Podolski: 5/10 – Anonymous. Very poor effort from the German before his inevitable substitution.
Cazorla: 6/10 – This was the kind of game where we needed him to step up, but Santi was hugely disappointing. He didn’t have a lot of space to work in, but he simply couldn’t impose himself on the game.
The Ox: 8/10 – Our only shining light in attack, The Ox was basically a one-man show at times. The only player who really had a go at the Wigan defence and tried to make things happen. It was his mis-hit shot that lead to the equaliser and he rattled the bar with a great effort in extra-time.
Sanogo: 7/10 – Battled well up front and hit the post with a close range header, but just lacked a little quality at times.
Subs:
Gibbs: 7/10 – Went close to getting on the scoresheet as Carson saved his goal-bound header. Defiantly improved the left-side when he replaced Monreal.
Giroud: 7/10 – Did okay in fairness when he came on. Scored his pen.
Kallstrom N/A – Only on for a matter of minutes but he tucked away his penalty expertly.
We might not have played at our best but we’re through to the final and that’s all that matters at the end of the day. Hopefully the players aren’t too knackered as we’ve got a huge game against West Ham on Tuesday where we need a win to regain fourth spot.
