TEAM NEWS: Diaby Injured Again, Vermaelen Returns + Wilshere Update
Arsene Wenger has been holding his pre-match press conference this morning ahead of Monday nights clash with Newcastle United and he’s given us the latest team news.
The good news is that everybody who featured during last weeks 3-0 win at Hull should be available to face the Geordies, which means the likes of Mesut Ozil and Nacho Monreal have suffered no ill-effect having just returned from injury.
There is also positive news on Thomas Vermaelen with Arsene confirming the skipper should return to the squad having missed the trip to the KC Stadium with a minor knock last weekend. It’s unlikely Vermaelen will start but it will be good to have him as an option from the bench if needed.
Unfortunately, Kieran Gibbs is still out with a hamstring injury while Abou Diaby isn’t in contention just yet after picking up a minor groin problem while playing for the under-21’s on Tuesday night against Chelsea.
Diaby has been out for well over a year so it’s to be expected he’ll pick up some muscular injuries as his body gets used to the intensity of playing top level football again. I still maintain it’s highly unlikely he’ll feature for the first team again.
Arsene gave a short update on Jack Wilshere, simply saying the midfielder is ‘progressing well’ as he continues to recover from his foot injury. Hopefully Jack can return to training soon and play again before the end of the season.
At Colney. Wenger: "Everybody available at Hull last week should be available [for Mon]. Vermaelen could be back, not Gibbs, not Diaby."
