Wenger’s 7-Man Summer Hit-List Revealed As Boss Plots £100m Spree
If the euphoria of winning the FA Cup wasn’t enough, we’ve woken this morning to widespread newspaper reports claiming that Arsene Wenger is set to sign a three-year contract extension and will be handed £100m to spend this summer.
The boss has delayed signing a new deal until after the FA Cup final, as he knew defeat to Hull would have made it extremely difficult for him to stay on as manager. Thankfully, he doesn’t have to worry as we managed to get the job done and end our nine-year drought.
The Daily Mail are one of several papers that claim Arsene will sign his new deal this week and will be given £100m to spend in the transfer market this summer with a striker, defensive midfielder and a possible replacement for Bacary Sagna his top priorities.
The Mail list seven players that are understood to be on Arsene’s hit-list this summer. In the striking department his key targets are Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandkukic.
In midfield Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin are favourites to replace Mikel Arteta in the middle of the park, with the ageing Spaniard expected to be relegated to a bit-part role next season.
Arsenal are still hopeful that an agreement can be found with Sagna but it’s looking increasingly likely he’ll leave when his contract expires next month leaving a huge void to fill at right-back. The newspaper claims that Toulouse’s Serge Aurier, Southampton’s Calum Chambers and Manchester City’s Micah Richards are all under consideration as potential replacements.
The boss was quizzed about his summer plans at the parade yesterday and he said that once the future’s of Sagna and Fabianski are resolved, he’ll look to bring in ‘two or three’ players. Wenger said:
‘First we have to wait for Sagna and see what he will do – also Fabianski. After we have to bring in two to three players to strengthen the squad, that’s for sure.’
For me, three is the minimum we need, before replacing any players who leave. A defensive midfielder, a pacey winger and a striker are all required. In addition, we’d need to replace Fabianski and Sagna if they leave, plus find suitable replacements if the likes of Vermaelen or Podolski are sold. That’s three to seven players.
In my ideal world, all of the above would stay and we’d sign Schneiderlin, Greizmann and Benzema. That would be a SUPERB summer, but we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks and months. I just hope we don’t leave it all until the last minute again.
