Arsenal Transfer News: Ozil OUT, Higuain IN?
There are some ‘interesting’ reports doing the rounds suggesting that Arsenal could be set to make another move for Gonzalo Higuain and may SELL Mesut Ozil to make room for the Argentinean hitman.
We’ve long been linked with Higuain and were believed to be close to signing him in the summer of 2013 before Napoli came in and gazumped our offer by agreeing to pay Real Madrid £35m for his signature.
His debut season in Serie A was a success as he scored 24 goals in 46 appearances, however, things haven’t gone so smoothly this campaign as Higuain is yet to score in his 5 league games so far and has been criticised by fans and the Italian press for his lackluster displays.
It’s led to speculation he could be on the move in January and the Daily Star are claiming that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is lining up another attempt to lure him to the Emirates.
The newspaper suggests that Napoli would be willing to sell for a fee in the region of what they paid Madrid 18 months ago while the 26-year-old is understood to be open to joining a club in the Champions League after seeing Napoli miss out in the qualifying rounds.
I personally have my doubts over the accuracy of this report as I really don’t see the boss spending over £30m on another striker after buying Danny Welbeck in the summer, and especially not with Giroud likely to be back playing again by January.
However, the press seem to think Higuain could be coming and the Metro claim that we may cash-in on Mesut Ozil to help raise the funds for the South American striker [not that we need the money].
In what’s a fairly hilarious report, the Metro suggest that Manchester City are lining-up a £32m bid for our much-criticised German international as Manuel Pellegrini apparently wants Ozil to replace unsettled midfielder Yaya Toure.
I’d hardly say that Ozil is a ‘like-for-like’ replacement for Toure but even if City were looking to mix things up, it’s almost laughable to suggest Arsenal would contemplate selling our record signing in January, never mind selling him to City.
Arsene Wenger has made a huge deal about the fact that we no longer need to sell our best players to our rivals anymore and despite all the rubbish we read in the papers, Ozil isn’t unhappy at the Emirates. He said as much in a Tweet last week when these stupid rumours of him leaving first surfaced.
So I think both these reports are total cr*p. Ozil will almost certainly not be joining City in January and I’d eat my hat if Wenger splashed out on Higuain this winter.
