Arsenal on alert as key target admits he’s ‘fed up’
Arsenal have been placed on red alert after long-term target Karim Benzema revealed he’s ‘fed up’ at constantly being substituted by new Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez.
Benzema was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer and at one stage a move actually looked like a possibility with several ‘In The Know’s’ suggesting a deal was close.
Some newspapers said back in August that Benzema was concerned about his role in the Madrid side following the arrival of Benitez as manager but he was eventually convinced to remain at the Bernabeu.
However, it looks like the striker is already growing frustrated under his new boss as Benzema has now revealed that he’s ‘fed up’ of being taken off by the Spaniard.
The striker failed to complete the full 90 minutes for the fifth time this season during Sunday’s Madrid derby. Benitez replaced the French hitman with Matteo Kovacic when Madrid were leading 1-0 despite the fact it was Benzema who had put them ahead.
The goal was his six in as many matches but despite his form in front of goal, he still hasn’t done enough to convince Benitez he’s worthy of seeing out the entire game and it seems it’s starting to frustrate Benzema.
The striker said:
“It’s true I’m fed up of being taken off,” Benzema is quoted as saying by the Mirror
“It’s true that the electronic board always shows the No.9. Ask Benitez why that is.
“I’m calm and will continue to work so I’m not always substituted. He took me off to get a result, for defensive reasons.
“Substitutions are what the coach decides, I’m just there to help my team-mates.”
This is a brave move by the striker as he risks driving a wedge between himself and Benitez as I’m sure the former Liverpool coach may not take too kindly to these comments.
Hopefully Arsene Wenger is sitting up and taking notice and will be watching on with interest over the coming weeks. I doubt anything would happen in January unless things got really ugly between the pair but if Benitez continues to sub Benzema off, or even worse puts him on the bench, then a move in the summer could be on the cards.
If so, I hope we’re leading the chase as Benzema would be a sensational signing.
