Club confirms midfielder is set to join Arsenal this week

By on January 5, 2016

FC Basel have confirmed that midfielder Mohamed Elneny is set to leave the club in the coming days with Arsenal expected to be his new destination.

Elneny has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks with the Mirror reporting last week that he had agreed personal terms on a contract worth £60,000-a-week and had undergone his medical.

The Independent suggest that Arsenal have agreed a fee worth in the region of £7.3m with FC Basel and the Swiss club have no all-but confirmed the deal themselves.

In a statement on their official website, Basel gave an update on the squad’s status after they returned to training following their Christmas break and confirmed that Elneny wasn’t present as he’s set to leave the club.

“Also absent was Mohamed Elneny, in which there could be a transfer in the coming days.” they said

Understandably they don’t name Arsenal as his destination but it’s obvious that the Egyptian midfielder is now set for a move to North London – given the amount of speculation surrounding the proposed deal.

The only thing holding up the deal is Elneny receiving international clearance but it appears that final stumbling block will be overcome before the end of the week.

The 23-year-old will be our first signing of the January window and the first outfield player to join the club since last January, as Arsene failed to sign any outfield players in the summer window.

Elneny’s arrival will be a welcome one as we’re severally limited in the middle of the park with Cazorla, Coquelin, Arteta and Wilshere all unavailable for selection at present.
