England camp ‘leak’ claims Vardy is 80% likely to turn down Arsenal
Another day and another update on the Jamie Vardy situation and it looks like the striker is set to reject his proposed move to Arsenal, if James Olley is correct.
The Evening Standard journalist has sent Arsenal fans on social media in to meltdown after claiming that a ‘leak’ in the England camp has informed him that Vardy is ’80 per cent’ likely to reject us and stay at Leicester.
The newspaper report indicates that Vardy has been discussing the situation at length with his England team mates over in France and he’s now heavily leaning towards remaining at the King Power.
As well as having a close emotional bond to Leicester, the main reason, according to the Evening Standard, is that Vardy is concerned he wouldn’t be a first team regular at Arsenal due to the level of competition for places – particularly when Danny Welbeck returns to fitness.
Arsene Wenger is understood to remain hopeful that the striker will opt for Arsenal but is also fearful that Vardy will find the prospect of playing for Leicester in the Champions League too good to resist.
As you’ll all probably know by now, Arsenal met Vardy’s £20m release clause last Friday and the 29-year-old verbally agreed a three-year deal – with the option of a fourth year – worth £120,000-a-week [source: Evening Standard].
However, the move stalled after Leicester launched a last ditch attempt to keep him after offering Vardy an improved deal worth around £100,000-a-week. This was enough to persuade the striker to put on hold all negotiations until after Euro 2016.
The Evening Standard says Arsenal have made it clear we’re willing to wait until after the tournament but if James Olley’s ‘leak’ is correct, then we might as well move on to other targets now rather than waste our time waiting to be rejected.
I’ve said all along that I’m not fussed either way about signing Vardy and this report only strengthens my view. If the player is honestly worried about not starting ahead of Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck, then it only confirms to me he’s not the right player for us.
We need an upgrade on Giroud/Welbeck, a world class striker, and Vardy is meant to be it. I personally don’t think he is, and it looks like Vardy might share the same belief as he obviously doesn’t think he’s good enough to justify his selection on a regular basis.

Do you think Benzema, Higuain or Aubameyang would be worried about Giroud or Welbeck? No. They’d trust that they are good enough to play.
So if these reports are accurate, and I’m not saying they are by the way, then I’d gladly miss out on Vardy and move on to other targets asap.
