Team News Update: Wenger on Ramsey, Giroud, Walcott, Cech & Gabriel
It’s been another busy day at Arsenal HQ with Arsene Wenger giving us a full team news and injury update ahead of our clash with Hull City on Saturday so here’s a round-up…
The boss confirmed earlier today that Walcott could return to the squad after missing the midweek Champions League draw at Paris Saint-Germain with a minor knee injury.
Theo was able to take part in training on Friday so Arsene says he’ll assess the attackers fitness after today’s session before he makes a decision over his involvement this weekend.
Unfortunately Ramsey is still unavailable as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following a month out with a hamstring injury that he suffered on the opening weekend of the season.
Tuesday’s League Cup third round tie will also come too soon for the Welshman so he’ll be aiming to finally make his comeback against Chelsea next weekend.
Gabriel has been back in training this week after recovering from an ankle injury that he suffered in pre-season and while the Brazilian will also miss tomorrow’s Hull game, he could be back in contention to face Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
Wenger confirmed that Cech will return in goal after Ospina started against PSG in midweek but Giroud will need a late fitness test to see if he’s available tomorrow after picking up a minor toe injury in Paris.
BACK ARSENAL TO WIN AT ODDS OF 5/1
Here is what the boss told Arsenal.com:
on the team news…
Walcott could be back in the squad, I have to check how well he came out of the session today. I haven’t spoken with the medical people yet. Ramsey is of course still out. Gabriel is back in normal training, I don’t think he will be included but he might play on Tuesday night. The injury situation is not bad at the moment.
on Ramsey…
I hoped [he would be back] but he is not ready.
on whether he could make the Forest game…
It will come too early I think. We are cautious with him because I do not want any setback with his hamstring. At the moment, Tuesday is too early for him.
on if he start will Cech…
Cech will be back, yes.
on if Olivier Giroud will start…
Olivier Giroud got a little knock on Tuesday night. I have to check if he is fit and available.
on what the problem was…
His big toe.
So overall, the injury situation is pretty good by Arsenal’s standards. Welbeck, Jenkinson and Mertesacker remain our long-term injury concerns but by next week Ramsey and Gabriel should be back in contention so we have strong squad to choose from.
