Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Shkodran Mustafi has suffered a serious hamstring injury and will miss the entire Christmas and New Year period while Aaron Ramsey has also picked up his own hamstring problem.

Mustafi was forced off midway through the first half of our 3-1 win over Stoke City this afternoon after pulling up with a hamstring injury in the 25th minute.

The German international looked in some discomfort as he was replaced by Hector Bellerin, with the Spaniard making his return at right-back following a month on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Mustafi immediately signalled to the boss as he walked off the pitch that it was his hamstring and Wenger has now confirmed that the injury is a serious one.

Speaking after our win today, Arsene told Arsenal.com that Shkodran is expected to miss at least 21 days which will rule him out of the festive period until around New Year’s Day.

on Mustafi’s injury…
It’s a bad one. He had nothing in midweek. I would not have played him today (if he had). I had Hector Bellerin on the bench. I could have played Holding or Gabriel. He wanted to play in Basel, because he said ‘no it’s nothing’, and it was completely clear. I checked three times and there was no problem for. I don’t know why it happened, but it looks a ‘good’ hamstring strain.

on the timeframe for Mustafi’s return…
Look, the minimum when you go out like that is 21 days. After that, today is December 10, so you are 21 days, that means he’ll have a nice Christmas!

No doubt he’ll undergo further assessment but if the three week absence is confirmed then it will come as a huge blow to our title hopes and it couldn’t have come as a worse time as the games are about to come thick and fast.

Three weeks out means Mustafi will miss trips to Everton and Manchester City as well as home games against West Brom on Boxing Day and Crystal Palace on January 1st.  If he takes slightly longer than three weeks to recover then Shkodran will also sit out the trip to Bournemouth on January 3rd.

Mustafi has proven to be a superb signing since joining from Valencia in the summer as he’s formed an excellent partnership with Koscielny at the back so he’s going to be sorely missed over the coming weeks.

Let’s hope for some good news when the injury is assessed early next week but it looks as though Gabriel is set for a run in the side over the coming weeks.

We also have another concern as Ramsey surprisingly missed today’s win over Stoke and Wenger didn’t mention any issue with the Welshman at his pre-match press conference.

No official word has come from the club about why Rambo was absent today but reporter Mattias Karen says he’s suffering from a slight hamstring problem.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious and Ramsey will be back for the Everton game as the last thing we need is the injuries to start piling up just as we move top of the table.
