Wenger offers positive update on Ozil & Sanchez contract talks
Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have informed him they want to stay at Arsenal and the boss is ‘certain’ we’ll reach an agreement over new deals with the pair.
The future’s of Sanchez and Ozil are in serious doubt as the attacking duo are in the final 18 months of their contracts with their current deals due to expire in the summer of 2018.
We’ve been in negotiations with their representatives for some time but are yet to reach an agreement over extensions with the newspapers claiming they want huge increases on their current deals.
Some corners of the media suggest they want in excess of £300,000-a-week but the majority of outlets beleive an agreement could be reached at nearer £250,000, but Arsenal are supposedly reluctant to break the £200,000 mark.
Understandably fans are nervous that we may be about to lose our two best players, however, Wenger has moved to ease those fears after revealing that both Sanchez and Ozil have assured him they want to stay and he’s ‘certain’ the club will find an agreement.
Arsene is quoted by the Metro, as telling beINsport:
‘(Ozil and Sanchez) tell me they want to stay,’
‘Alexis is a committed player and I am certain (we will reach an agreement).’
We’ll have to wait and see how negotiations develop over the coming months but I must admit I don’t share Wenger’s optimism. Both players know they can earn far more at other clubs and Arsenal simply can’t and won’t pay over £200,000-a-week for both players.
We could maybe stretch to paying one of them in excess of £200k a week but not both, so I’m already preparing myself to lose at least one of our key men this summer.
Plus, we’re hardly showing them we can compete for major titles on the field either, so I don’t see Mesut or Alexis being in any rush to commit their future’s while we’re blowing another title race.
