[Player Ratings] Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: Coquelin & Monreal woeful
Arsene Wenger’s team selection gamble back-fired as Arsenal slumped to a familiar 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield this evening.
The boss inexplicably chose to leave Alexis Sanchez on the bench but to make matters worse he also selected Francis Coquelin and Alex Iwobi once again despite their awful form of late.
Predictably, it was another horror start for us as we found ourselves 2-0 down at half time as Firmino and Mane ripped through our porous defence inside the opening 45 minutes.
Sanchez was called from the bench at half time and what do you know, our best player had an immediate impact as he set up Danny Welbeck to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute.
But Liverpool wrapped-up the game in stoppage time to secure a 3-1 win and leave Arsenal outside the top four and in total free fall having lost four of our last six league games.
Here are my ratings from another shit-show at Anfield:
Cech 6/10 | Great save to deny Coutinho midway through the first half and made a couple of other stops but still conceded three times.
Bellerin 5/10 | Full of running down the wing but was all over the place at the back as Coutinho and Firmino ripped us apart.
Mustafi 5/10 | Couldn’t handle the pace and movement of the Liverpool attack.
Koscielny 5/10 | Lost out on a key header to Firmino in the build-up to their first goal and dragged out of position for the second.
Monreal 3/10 | Struggled badly against Mane all night and left the Liverpool attacker free to score their all-important second. Woeful night.
Coquellin 3/10 | A complete liability once again. No idea why he started and was hauled off at half time.
Xhaka 5/10 | Struggled to match the intensity of the Liverpool side.
Oxlade-Chamberlain 5/10 | He should have started in the middle. Had no real impact on the wing in the first half. Better after the break.
Iwobi 4/10 | Another terrible performance. Why on earth is Wenger continuing to start him?! It’s not the lad’s fault, he needs to be protected when out of form.
Welbeck 6/10 | Left Monreal exposed for their second goal but scored a lovely dink to make it 2-1.
Giroud 4/10 | Barely touched the ball in the first half but almost scored with a fine head shortly after the break. Looked to be carrying a hip problem. Subbed.
Subs:
Sanchez 6.5/10 | Made an instant impact after coming on at half time after setting up Welbeck for our goal. Scandalous decision to drop him.
Walcott 4/10 | Won a couple of free kicks. That’s about it.
Perez 4/10 | Had a powerful shot blocked.
So another big defeat away to one of our rivals and we’re now sitting outside the top four. Another defeat to Bayern on Tuesday is surely on the cards which is going to dent morale even more. Big task from Wenger to get our season back on track and no a win over Lincoln next weekend won’t make things alright….
