[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-5 Bayern: The Ox shines, Sanchez shocking
Arsenal suffered humiliation in the Champions League yet again as Bayern Munich ran out 5-1 victors at the Emirates tonight to secure a 10-2 aggregate win. However, the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story as several poor decisions affecting the outcome of the game.
We were easily the better of the two sides in the first half and after Theo Walcott had opened the scoring he should have been awarded a penalty after being brought down by Alonso but the officials waved away our protests.
The second key moment came shortly after half time when Laurent Koscienly nudged Roberto Lewandowski in the area. A penalty was awarded and the ref initially gave Kos a yellow but then changed his mind to send the defender off in the 54th minute.
Lewandowski converted the penalty to kill the tie but the referee had ruined what was an excellent game, and performance, from Arsenal up until that point.
However, there was is no defending the way we capitulated following the sending off as the players simply gave up and all the effort they put in during the first half disappeared.
Bayern went 2-1 ahead through Robben with further goals from Costa and a double from Vidal giving the visitors an undeserved 5-1 win – with two of those goals offside.
Watch the goals here if you dare
Here are my ratings:
Ospina 5/10 | Poor clearance led to their second goal and conceded five yet again.
Bellerin 7/10 | Was excellent in the first half and continued to work hard after the sending off while others gave up.
Mustafi 5/10 | Error for their fourth goal as Vidal ghosted past him. All over the place once Koscielny departed yet again.
Koscielny 7/10 | Clumsy challenge on Lewandowski but no way it was a red. Corrupt officials completely killed what was a decent game. We were technically leading the tie 2-1 during the time Kos was on the pitch over the two legs, which shows how important he is.
Monreal 6/10 | Not as influential as Bellerin and was partially at fault for their second goal.
Ramsey 5/10 | Worked hard in the first half, although his touch was poor at times, but drifted out of the game after the break.
Xhaka 6/10 | Controlled the game when we had ten men but forced to be a make-shift centre-back when Kos went off.
Walcott 7.5/10 | Outstanding in the first half. Opened the scoring with a thunderous goal for 1-0 and should have had a penalty shortly after. Influence and desire faded when we went down to ten.
Oxlade-Chamberlain 7.5/10 | Another excellent performance in central midfield. The Ox ran the show in the first half and was one of the few who continued to work after the sending off.
Sanchez 3/10 | Pathetic display from our stroppy superstar. His head was clearly elsewhere as he wasn’t even working hard and was at fault for their second goal. He couldn’t even be bothered to moan when he was rightly taken off and was seen laughing on the bench. Needs to sort his attitude out or he should be permanently axed until he leaves in the summer.
Giroud 5/10 | Missed a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly after half time which proved to be a defining moment. We score and it’s game on.
Subs:
Coquelin, Ozil, Perez 5/10 | All three came on under difficult circumstances and did little to prevent our humiliation.
