Arsenal offer defender lucrative deal following £50m transfer talks
According to a report in the Metro, Arsenal have offered to make Virgil van Dijk one of our highest paid players after holding talks over a possible £50m move from Southampton.
Despite yet another disappointing defeat away to our rivals, Arsene Wenger is still being tipped to sign another contract and oversee a squad overhaul this summer with a dominant defender on the agenda.
The boss has recently switched to a 3-4-3 formation and it looks as though he now wants to add to his defensive options after deciding to use the new system next season.
van Dijk has developed in to one of the best centre-back’s in the Premier League since joining Southampton from Celtic in 2015 and the Dutch international has been short-listed as a prime target for Arsene.
The Mirror claimed recently that we had opened talks with Southampton over a possible deal and the Metro say today that we’ve offered to make him one of our highest paid players at the club.
However, it looks like the promise of a lucrative contract hasn’t been enough to tempt van Dijk to north London as the newspaper says he has set his heart on joining Chelsea instead.
The Metro say the league leaders are now confident they will wrap-up a £50m deal at the end of the season after offering to throw Andreas Christensen into the deal.

If these reports are accurate then it will be a huge blow as van Dijk would have been a superb signing for us and he is exactly the type of centre-back we need to sign this summer.
Sadly it looks like he’ll be heading to Stamford Bridge to further strengthen the champions-elect meaning we’ll have to move on to other targets.
