Arsenal star gets surprise call up for international duty
Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has surprisingly been called up for Spain’s upcoming friendly with Colombia and their World Cup qualifier with Macedonia.
Monreal has been a regular with Arsenal all season and has been playing in a new role in the back three in recent weeks with Kieran Gibbs playing out in the left wing-back position.
I personally don’t think Nacho has had his best year as he’s been caught out of position far too often and his inconsistent form has seen him left out of the recent Spain squads.
However, the 31-year-old has been named in Julen Lopetegui’s latest squad which was announced this morning ahead of Spain’s friendly with Colombia and their World Cup qualifier with Macedonia next month.
Monreal has got the nod over Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and will compete with Jordi Alba for the left-back spot, but the Barcelona man is favourite to start.
However, once again there is no place for Hector Bellerin in the senior squad as he’s had to make do with a place in the under-21’s.
