[Graphic] Proof Arsenal have signed a superstar to replace Monreal
Arsenal announced the signing of Sead Kolasinac yesterday with the Bosnian international set to arrive on a free transfer from Schalke on July 1st.
Kolasinac decided to run down his contract after failing to agree terms over a new deal and Arsenal were able to fend off stiff competition to sign the talented defender.
The 23-year-old has developed in to one of the best left-backs in German football over the past few years and was voted in the Bundesliga Team of the Season last year.
Kolasinac is fully expected to replace Nacho Monreal as our first choice left sided defender next season with the Bosnian comfortable playing in a back four or as a wing-back if Wenger sticks with the 3-4-2-1 formation.
Given his attacking instincts, I’d suggest that Kolasinac will be perfect in the left wing-back position and the stats seem to prove he’s going to be a big upgrade on Monreal and Gibbs.
The guys at Oulala have created an interesting infographic that shows how Kolasinac compares to our current duo in six key areas on a per game basis from last years performances.
As you can see, Kolasinac won more tackles [2.8], made more interceptions [3.2], had more shots [0.7] and was level with Gibbs for key passes [0.9]. He also scored 3 goals compared to Monreal/Gibbs’ 0 and created 5 assists compared to Monreal’s 2 and Gibbs’ 1.
Obviously we shouldn’t go on stats alone but I think we’ve signed an absolute superstar in Kolasinac and have no doubt he’ll prove to be a sensational piece of business on a free transfer.
