Arsenal eyeing swoop for prolific Bundesliga attacker, Man Utd also keen
According to reports in Germany via the Daily Mail, Arsenal are eyeing a swoop for Marco Reus if he decides to leave Borussia Dortmund but we’ll face competition from Man Utd.
Reus has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium several times in the past with boss Arsene Wenger a long-time fan of the German international’s.
The 28-year-old has developed in to one of the best attackers in Europe since joining Dortmund in 2012 as he’s been prolific in the final third having provided an impressive 89 goals and 61 assists in his 189 games.
However, Reus’s career has been plagued by a number of serious injuries and he’s currently on the sidelines nursing a cruciate knee ligament injury that will keep him on the sidelines until the early part of 2018.
Reus only managed 17 league appearances last season and hasn’t managed to play 30 Bundesliga games in four seasons [I know what you’re thinking, he’d be perfect for Arsenal!].
But his talent can’t be questioned as he’s won the German Player of the Season twice and been named in the Bundesliga Team of the Year five times throughout his career.
The German attackers future at Dortmund is in doubt as his contract expires in 2019 and Reus recently admitted that he might seek a new challenge. He’s quoted by the Daily Mail as saying:
‘There are four or five international clubs who interest me.
‘On May 31 next year, I will turn 30. That would be my last big contract and a final opportunity to try something different.’
These comments appear to have alerted Arsenal as the newspaper is citing reports coming out of Germany that claim we are now eyeing a swoop for Reus if he decides to leave Dortmund.
Wenger is going to need to rejuvenate his attack over the coming months as both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are set to leave when their contracts expire next summer [or they may even leave in January].
Reus is most similar to Sanchez so Wenger is probably viewing him as a replacement for our Chilean super-star – who’s being tipped to join Manchester City.
However, we aren’t the only team in the running as the Daily Mail claim Man Utd are also monitoring Reus’ situation so it will be a battle to lure him to the Emirates if he does opt for a move to England.
On paper, I’d love to see Reus replace Sanchez but the problem is he just can’t stay fit so despite his undeniable talent, his signing would still be a huge risk.
