Arsenal eyeing swoop for Portuguese international but Man Utd also keen
According to a report in The Sun, Arsenal are eyeing a swoop for Porto midfielder Danilo Pereira but we could face competition from Manchester United for his signature.
Pereira has developed a reputation as being one of the best defensive midfielders in the Portuguese Primeira Liga since joining Porto from Maritimo in 2015.
The 26-year-old is also a regular for his country having racked up 27 caps for Portugal and he helped them to a shock win at the 2016 European championships.
Arsenal have been linked with Danilo in the past and it looks like we’ve stepped up our interest as The Sun claim Arsene Wenger had scouts in the stands to watch the midfielder in action last week.
The newspaper says our representatives looked-on as Danilo scored a lovely volley to help Porto secure a 3-2 victory over Portimonense on Friday evening.
The Sun believe Arsenal are hoping to lure the midfielder to north London but we could face stiff competition from United as they also had scouts in the stands to watch him last week.
I’ve said for several months that central midfield is an area we need to strengthen and I think Danilo would be an excellent addition to the squad if we could land him.
He’s 6ft 2in, powerful and good on the ball so he could be the idea partner for Aaron Ramsey in the middle of the park. I am a fan of Granit Xhaka but I just don’t feel he’s athletic enough to play in a two alongside Rambo so Danilo could be the man for the job.
Let’s see if Wenger decides to make a formal move for Danilo over the coming months but if he doesn’t, then let’s hope he has an alternative lined-up as we desperately need an upgrade in the defensive midfield department if we want to be genuine title contenders.
