Arsenal boss confirms key man has suffered thigh injury
Arsene Wenger has provided a team news update ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash with BATE Borisov tomorrow night.
The boss confirmed that Shkodran Mustafi was forced off with a thigh injury during the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend.
The German defender was at fault for the second goal and limped off shortly after with some fans suggesting he had simply bottled it and faked injury.
However, Wenger insists Mustafi is suffering from a minor thigh problem that will keep him out tomorrow but he could be back to face Southampton on Sunday.
The fact is, Mustafi would have missed the BATE game anyway as he’ll be rested along with the rest of the first team so hopefully he’ll be available again this weekend as he was in fine form before his gaff against United.
Otherwise, the squad is in good health with Santi Cazorla the only other absentee right now so we should see the boss make plenty of changes to his starting eleven tomorrow night.
The likes of David Ospina, Calum Chambers, Per Mertesacker, Francis Coquelin, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud are pushing for recalls while youngsters Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could also feature.
At Colney. Wenger: "We have a small problem with Mustafi from Saturday but everybody else looks alright. It was a little thigh problem. It is possibility [he could be available for Southampton]. If not, it will be West Ham."
