Arsenal in battle to sign £60m+ want-away attacker – report
According to the Daily Star, Arsenal will battle it out with Manchester City for the signing of want-away Leicester City attacker Riyah Mahrez in the summer.
We’ve been constantly linked with the 26-year-old ever since he fired Leicester City to the title in 2016 and the Mirror reported last month that Arsenal chiefs had made Mahrez a January target.
We ended up signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived from Borussia Dortmund with Olivier Giroud heading to Chelsea.
However, we still haven’t signed a replacement for Theo Walcott – who joined Everton last month – and it seems Wenger is ready to once again renew his interest in Mahrez this summer.
The Algerian international is currently on strike at Leicester after being denied a proposed £60m switch to Man City on deadline day last week and he’s almost certain to leave the King Power at the end of the season.
City are expected to go back in for him but the Daily Star claim Arsenal are ready to battle the champions-elect as Wenger is still keen to lure Mahrez to the Emirates.
The newspaper says the boss has been making regular checks on the attacker by enquiring about his character and how well he trains, etc – although I’m not sure the fact he’s currently gone AWOL will go down too well!
I think we’re in for another busy summer of transfer activity at Arsenal with plenty of incoming and outgoings and no doubt Mahrez will continue to touted as a target.
However, with City leading the chase and Leicester holding out for well in excess of £60m, I personally think we’ve missed our chance to sign him.
