Details emerge of Arsenal’s £37.5m bid for Brazilian attacker
According to a report in the Mirror, Arsenal made a £37.5m bid for Malcom during the January transfer window but Bordeaux refused to sell the attacker at any price.
Malcom was strongly linked with a move to the Emirates throughout the winter window with widespread reports suggesting we had met with the players agents in London to discuss a potential deal.
The 20-year-old had caught Arsene Wenger’s eye after developing in to one of the most exciting young wingers in European football having provided 8 goals and 6 assists in his 25 appearances this season.
It seems Arsenal were serious about signing the Brazilian attacker as the Mirror are carrying a report from Bild that claims we tabled a £37.5m offer for Malcom’s signature in January.
However, the report from the German publication says Bordeaux refused to sell at any price as they didn’t want to lose their star man in the middle of the season.
We ended up signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez while striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also joined from Borussia Dortmund.
Arsenal are expected to renew their interest in Malcom this summer as Bordeaux are reportedly prepared to do business at the end of the season but we’ll face plenty of competition for his signature.
Malcom is predominantly a right winger but can also play on the opposite flank and I think he’d be an excellent signing as our squad has a distinct lack of width right now.
However, we need to resolve the managerial issue before we can worry signing players as it’s vital the board sack Wenger and a new manager will have his own transfer targets in mind.
