Arsenal could sign top class duo for £88m following latest developments
It’s been another interesting day of transfer gossip and reports suggest Arsenal have been boosted in their pursuits of two world class players.
First up and the Mirror are carrying quotes from Jan Oblak that suggest the goalkeeper is less than certain he’ll be an Atletico Madrid player next season.
Arsenal are among a host of clubs who’ve been linked with the Slovenian international in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a new number one at the end of the season.
Petr Cech turns 36 in May and he’s dropped too many mistakes this campaign to continue as our first choice keeper next year so there’s no doubt we need a reliable number one this summer.
Oblak would be a sensational addition as he’s developed in to one of the best keepers in the world over the past few years and he’s conceded just 14 goals in 29 La Liga games so far this season.
The 25-year-old has now opened the door to a move this summer after admitting he doesn’t know if he’ll still be with Madrid next season and insisted he’s no closer to signing a new contract.
Oblak is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“It is difficult to talk about what will happen tomorrow, more difficult to say what will happen next season,”
“About a new contract at Atletico I can only tell you one thing – there is nothing new. That is the only certain thing.
“I know there have been many things written about how everything is agreed, and also the other way saying there will be no new contract.”
The Mirror claim that Oblak has an £88m buyout clause written in to his current deal and while that could put off Arsenal from pursuing a deal, I’d love to see us make a statement by going all out for the Madrid stopper as he’d make a huge difference to our side.
Wenger also needs to bring in another midfielder this summer as it looks increasingly likely that Jack Wilshere may leave the club while Santi Cazorla’s career could be over due to a serious ankle injury.
Max Meyer has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates and we’ve also been handed a major boost in our pursuit of the midfielder after he called off contract talks with Schalke.
The 22-year-old’s current deal expires in June and he’s so far refused to sign an extension but Schalke were due to hold fresh negotiations with the German international this week.
However, the Bundesliga clubs president Clemens Tonnies has now revealed that Meyer’s camp cancelled the proposed talks at the last minute so it looks like he has no immediate intention of committing his future to the Veltins Arena.
Tonnies is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was cancelled by his agent on short notice,”
The Mirror claim this has handed Arsenal a real boost and I think Meyer would be a sensational signing on a free transfer if we could win the race for his signature this summer.
He used to be a winger but he’s excelled this season in a deep lying playmaker role so he could be Arsenal’s ‘new Cazorla’ if we could lure him to the Emirates.
It’s gearing up to be another busy summer but I think it would be £88m well spent if we could sign Oblak and Meyer as they’d solve two problem areas we badly need to address over the coming months.
