Wenger offers update on Mkhitaryan and Elneny ahead of Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid
Arsene Wenger has provided an update on the fitness of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mohamed Elneny ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Atletico Madrid.
Mkhitaryan has missed our last four games in all competitions since damaging knee ligaments during the first leg of our Europa League quarter final win over CSKA Moscow.
There were initial fears the Armenian international would miss the rest of the season but he’s made a swift recovery and returned to light training late last week.
The 29-year-old is still not fit enough to resume full training with the rest of the squad so Wenger has confirmed Mkhitaryan won’t be available for selection against Madrid tomorrow night.
Arsene has also revealed that Elneny is likely to miss the rest of the season after damaging ankle ligaments during the 4-1 victory over West Ham at the weekend.
The 25-year-old rolled his ankle in the first half and left the pitch on a stretcher sparking fears he may have suffered serious damage that would put his participation at the World Cup in jeopardy.
However, Wenger says there is still a ‘little’ chance Elneny could return for our final Premier League game at Huddersfield but it expected to be fit to play for Egypt in Russia this summer.
The boss told Arsenal.com:
on the team news…
Mkhitaryan is not back in the squad and Mohamed Elneny is out for the rest of the season.on Elneny…
He has a little chance to play at Huddersfield. I think he will be available for Egypt at the World Cup.
It’s a blow that Mkhitaryan is still not available to face Atletico as we lack quality options in attack without him but hopefully he should be back in contention for the second leg in Spain next week.
However, with Elneny now on the sidelines, it’s fortunate that Jack Wilshere is set to return after missing the last two games with an ankle injury so he should come straight back in to midfield tomorrow night.
