Arsenal boss confirms surprise injury boost ahead of Man Utd trip
Arsene Wenger has confirmed a surprise injury boost ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon after declaring Henrik Mkhitaryan available for selection.
The Armenian international has missed our last five games in all competitions after damaging knee ligaments during the quarter final first leg win over CSKA Moscow almost four weeks ago.
There were initially fears Mkhitaryan could miss the rest of the season but Wenger soon played down those reports by suggesting the playmaker would return by the end of April.
The 29-year-old began light training on his own about a week ago but was still not included in the squad for the Europa League first leg clash with Atletico Madrid on Thursday night.
Given he wasn’t even on the bench, it was assumed Miki would still be short for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford, however, Wenger has confirmed the attacker is available to face his former side.
During his team news update ahead of the United game, the boss also revealed that we have no fresh injury concerns following the draw against Madrid so Mo Elneny and Santi Cazorla are our main injury absentees.
Wenger told Arsenal.com:
on the latest team news…
We have no new problems. Mkhitaryan is available. Elneny is out, Cazorla too of course. Everyone else is OK.
I’m a little surprised to hear Mkhitaryan is back in contention as we haven’t even been told he was in full training yet but obviously it’s a huge boost to have him available.
Wenger is likely to rest players ahead of the trip to Spain on Thursday so it would make sense to give Mkhitaryan some minutes, either from the start or off the bench, against United to get him up to speed for the Madrid game.
