Arsenal eyeing Oblak & Sokratis as Mislintat targets 7 new signings
According to the Independent, Arsenal are eyeing moves for Jan Oblak and Sokratis Papastathopoulos with Sven Mislintat looking to sign up to SEVEN new players this summer.
The club are working hard trying to find a replacement for Arsene Wenger after he confirmed he’s stepping down as manager but we’re still pressing ahead with our summer transfer business.
Our head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, has been tasked with identifying our targets along with Raul Sanllehi and the Independent claim they are planning to replace the entire back five!
Petr Cech’s best days are behind him and he turns 35 this month so there’s no doubt we need to sign a new to class goalkeeper and the newspaper says Jan Oblak is our prime target.
The Slovenian international is one of the best keepers in the world – as he proved last week at the Emirates – so he’d be a sensational signing if we could lure him to north London.
However, it’s not going to be easy to prise him away from Atletico Madrid as the report says he’s valued at around £70m which will probably make him an unrealistic target for Arsenal so we may need to move further down the list.
Our defence also needs major surgery as we’ve shipped 48 league goals already this season. Laurent Koscielny hasn’t been the same since aggravating his Achilles injury earlier in the season while Shkodran Mustafi has been a woeful signing so the Independent claims we’re looking to bring in two new centre-backs with Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos a key target.
The Greek international has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal in recent months and obviously Mislintat knows him well from his time at Dortmund so it appears he wants a reunion at the Emirates.
With Nacho Monreal 32 and Hector Bellerin being tipped to leave this summer, the report says Arsenal are also planning to buy two new full-backs but they don’t put forward any possible names.
It’s not just at the back where we’re looking to strengthen as the Independent says a new central midfielder is on the agenda while Mislintat also wants to add another wide man to the squad meaning he wants to buy up to seven new players.
Jack Wilshere is close to leaving after failing to sign a new deal with his current one set to expire in June while Aaron Ramsey has just one year remaining on his contract and is no closer to signing an extension.
Granit Xhaka has also been hugely inconsistent and is prone to moments of madness so it’s no surprise the club are wanting to sign a midfielder this summer. I’ve also said all season that we lack width in the squad so it’s good to hear Mislintat is eyeing a wide man.
It certainly sounds like it’s going to be a hectic summer at Arsenal and there’s no doubt it’s going to be one of the most important transfer windows in recent memory. However, first we need to find a new manager…..
