[Player Ratings] Atletico Madrid 1-0 Arsenal: Chambers excellent, Monreal woeful
Arsenal have been dumped out of the Europa League after losing 1-0 [2-1 on agg] to Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano this evening.
Diego Costa [who else?] scored the only goal of the game just before half time and we barely offered a threat to find an equaliser despite enjoying much of the possession.
Here are my ratings:
Ospina 6/10 | Went down far too early for the goal which made it easy for Costa to score. Made a couple of other routine saves.
Bellerin 5/10 | Got in to some great positions but final ball was extremely poor. Hugely frustrating.
Mustafi 6/10 | Solid enough against Costa and Griezmann. Didn’t really put a foot wrong.
Koscielny N/A | Off early after tearing his Achilles. Season over. No World Cup. Heartbreaking.
Monreal 4/10 | The same as Bellerin, but his crosses were even worse! Two in particular in the second half were embarrassing.
Xhaka 7/10 | Had our only shot on target in the second half with a decent effort from the edge of the box. Solid display in the middle of the park.
Ramsey 6/10 | Worked hard as always and tried to get in to some dangerous positions but ran out of steam in the second half. Fluffed a good chance too.
Wilshere 6/10 | Another average display. Didn’t take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Ozil 5/10 | Disappointing. We needed our star man to step up but he just couldn’t influence the game at all.
Welbeck 5/10 | A willing runner but lacked the killer instinct to make a difference.
Lacazette 5/10 | Frustrating night against a well organised Madrid defence. Had one half-chance in the first half but that was it.
Subs:
Chambers 8/10 | On for Koscielny early on and was excellent. Made several big blocks and gave his all.
Mkhitaryan 6.5/10 | Eager to impress and had a decent shot just over.
So that’s it. Our Europa League adventure is over and Arsene Wenger won’t get his fairytale ending. It was a hugely frustrating game as we had opportunities to create some chances but the final ball was poor and Atletico dealt with them easily.
Now we’ve got to finish the league campaign and look forward to a new start in the summer.
