Arsenal want to sign £30m star from Euro giants as Emery eyes 4th signing

By on July 4, 2018

According to the Independent, Arsenal are hoping to sign Barcelona star Andre Gomes this summer after Unai Emery identified the £30m-rated midfielder as a key transfer target.

Emery has been busy revamping the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger since replacing the Frenchman earlier in the summer with goalkeeper Bernd Leno, right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos already in the bag.

A deal to sign defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira is also reportedly on the verge of completion but with Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere both exiting the club following the expiration of their contracts, Emery could be in the market for two central midfielders.

Gomes has now emerged as a target as the Independent claims Emery wants to sign the Portuguese international as he feels he has all the qualities he’s looking for in a top class midfielder.

The newspaper says Barcelona are willing to sell for £30m this summer and Emery is ready to sell some fringe players to raise the required funds having spent the majority of his transfer budget already.

Gomes was once considered to be one of the most exciting young players in Europe after impressing during his time at Valencia before joining Barcelona in 2016 but his stock has fallen at the Nou Camp.

The 24-year-old has struggled to establish himself at the European giants having started just 6 La Liga games last year so he’s looking to leave in search of regular football and it seems Arsenal are willing to offer him a fresh challenge in England.

If we could get him playing to his full potential that he was showing at Valencia then Gomes would be a superb addition to the squad and £30m seems reasonable in today’s over-inflated market.

However, his confidence is rock bottom and the Premier League is a tough place to come when you’re not playing at your best so I think this would be a risky transfer.
