Arsenal team news: Fresh double blow, 6 players could miss Wolves + Monreal update
Arsenal have provided a full team news update ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash including the latest on Danny Welbeck, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Nacho Monreal.
Thursday night’s 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League was overshadowed by a serious injury to Welbeck with the striker stretchered off in the first half with a suspected broken ankle.
Unai Emery suggested after the game the injury was serious and the England international remains in hospital being assessed. It’s not yet known exactly what Welbeck has done but the club aim to provide confirmation over the coming days.
In what was a costly night for Arsenal, Lichtsteiner also suffered a knock as he limped off in the second half with a hamstring injury. The club have confirmed the full-back is being assessed ahead of Sunday’s game but it’s highly unlikely the Swiss international will feature against Wolves.
There is also an update on Monreal and the left-back remains a doubt for the game this weekend. The Spaniard returned to training this week after missing the last five games with a hamstring injury but it remains to be seen whether he’ll be available for selection on Sunday.
Mohamed Elneny is certain to miss out this weekend as he’s not due to resume full training until next week as he bids to return from a thigh strain that’s kept him out of our last few games.
Laurent Koscielny is still working his way back to full fitness following a ruptured Achilles that he suffered during our Europa League semi final with Atletico Madrid last season. However, Emery suggested recently that Kos could be available after the upcoming international break.
The final update regards Dinos Mavropanos and the young centre-back is expected to resume full training at some point this month as he looks to make his return from a niggling groin injury.
It means if Lichtsteiner and Monreal are both ruled out of action this weekend, then Emery will be without six players for the visit of Wolves to the Emirates on Sunday.
