[Player ratings] Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal: Lichtsteiner & Sokratis woeful for Gunners
Arsenal put-in our worst performance of the season to be thrashed 5-1 by Liverpool at Anfield this evening.
Incredibly, Arsenal opened the scoring via Ainsley Maitland-Niles but Liverpool equalised in fortuitous circumstances when the ball fell kindly to Firmino who tapped home. Some shocking defending then saw the Brazilian make it 2-1 before more comedy defending from Arsenal allowed Liverpool to go 3-1 up.
Sokratis gave away a needless penalty in first half stoppage time. Liverpool converted to make it 4-1 and the referee then gifted them another soft pen in the second half – which Firmino scored to complete his hat-trick and the 5-1 rout.
Here are my ratings:
Leno 5/10 | Wasn’t particularly at fault for any of the goals and made a couple of good saves. Completely let down by the non-existent defence in front of him.
Lichtsteiner 3/10 | Poor clearance hit Salah and gifted Liverpool the equaliser. Also partially at fault for the third goal. Another game to forget for the Swiss defender.
Mustafi 3/10 | Shocking defending to allow Firmino to waltz through to make it 2-1. Subbed at half-time.
Sokratis 3/10 | Like Mustafi, woeful in trying to stop Firmino for his second goal and needlessly bundled Salah over for the penalty. Also lost Mane for the third goal. Awful display from the usually reliable Greek.
Maitland-Niles 6/10 | One of our better performers. Great to see him get the opening goal and he was a threat behind Robertson, especially in the first half, but ultimately on the wrong end of a hiding.
Torreira 4/10 | Gave away possession to gift Liverpool possession for the second goal and looked knackered. Needs a rest.
Xhaka 4/10 | Fortunate not to be sent off in the first half for stupidly kicking the ball away while on a yellow. Couldn’t get hold of the midfield at all.
Kolasinac 4/10 | Stupid decision to push Lovren for the second penalty. He’s got away with it in the past but not today. Offered very little going forward too.
Ramsey 5/10 | Started well and worked hard at times but lacked quality in his passing and struggled with the pace of the game.
Iwobi 6/10 | Our best outfield player – which wasn’t a difficult award to win. Was our only real threat and set-up the goal with a lovely cross for Maitland-Niles.
Aubameyang 4/10 | Anonymous. Had absolutely no service and you had to feel sorry for him at times. Barely touched the ball during a frustrating evening.
Subs:
Koscielny 4/10 | Replaced Mustafi and just like the German, he was all over the place at the back.
Lacazette 5/10 | Should have had a pen late on.
Guendouzi N/A | Late cameo.
