[Ratings & highlights] Everton 1-0 Arsenal: Ozil & Elneny woeful for inept Arsenal
Arsenal produced another painful away performance to lose 1-0 at Everton this afternoon – denting our hopes of finishing in the top four this season.
Alexandre Lacazette saw a strong early penalty shout waived away by the referee and just a few minutes later we were behind. Some poor defending from a long throw-in lead to Jagielka tapping home for 1-0 in the 10th minute.
We struggled to get going and had ‘one of those days’ where practically everything went wrong. Uni Emery was forced to make two changes at the break and we did improve in the second half but in truth we were second best all over the pitch today.
These are my ratings:
Leno 6.5/10 | Could do nothing for the opener and saved well from Bernard to keep it 1-0 early in the second half. Made a couple of other routine saves from Sigurdsson and Bernard.
Mustafi 4/10 | Failed to deal with the Digne throw-in for the opening goal and was all over the place at times. Booked for a poor late tackle on Calvert-Lewin. Threw himself into some reckless challenges too.
Sokratis 5/10 | Was given a tough time by the pace and movement of Calvert-Lewin but made a couple of important blocks in the second half. Booked so misses our next two games.
Monreal 5/10 | Gave Richarlison WAY too much space and was given a real though time by the Everton attack. Rare poor display from the usually reliable Spaniard.
Maitland-Niles 4/10 | Had a nightmare today. Was okay in the first half but was shocking after the break when he moved to right-back. Bernard gave him all sorts of problems and he was caught out of position several times.
Guendouzi 4/10 | Wandered all over the place in the first half and left us badly exposed. Early booking certainly didn’t help as it hindered his game. More disciplined in the second half but lost out on the midfield battle.
Elneny 4/10 | Poor for the opening goal and gave absolutely nothing to the side. Every pass was sideways or backwards and he just wandered around the pitch. Hooked at half time.
Kolasinac 5/10 | Asleep for the throw-in as he let the ball deflect off him straight to Jagielka and wasn’t his usual self down the left as he was pinned back. Subbed at half-time as we went to a back four.
Ozil 4/10 | Anonymous in the first half and wasn’t much better after the break. Captained the side but showed very little leadership. Failed to create a single chance or complete a take-on during the game. A real shame he dropped this performance as he’s been in great form lately.
Mkhitaryan 5/10 | Couldn’t get in the game in the first half. Saw more of the ball after the break and flashed a decent effort just wide but was bullied off the ball too often.
Lacazette 4/10 | Unlucky not to get a penalty at 0-0 and was given some rough treatment at times. The physical approach from Everton worked as Lacazette seemed to strop for much of the game. Lack of service didn’t help his mood.
Subs:
Aubameyang 4/10 | No real impact after coming on at half-time. Should have started up front with Lacazette.
Ramsey 6/10 | Added a real impetus after the break but missed a great chance to make it 1-1. Should certainly have started.
Iwobi 6/10 | His direct running caused Everton some problems but once again his end product wasn’t there.
This was a woeful display from the team and it’s worrying that we still can’t perform away from home. With four tricky away games left [out of six] we really need to improve on the road if we’re to finish in the top four.
