Sami Khedira was spotted in the directors box at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon amid reports suggesting Arsenal are interested in signing him this summer.
On Thursday, the Express carried a report from TuttoMercatoWeb that claimed Arsenal are keen on signing Khedira as he looks to find a fresh start following the arrivals of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot.
Juventus are looking to trim their squad and the German international is regarded as dispensable so the Italian publication suggested that Arsenal had joined Wolves, Fiorentina and Valencia in the race for his signature.
With such speculation floating around, it’s easy to understand why some fans got excited when Khedira was spotted sitting in the directors box at the Emirates this afternoon to watch Arsenal take on Lyon in the Emirates Cup.
The 32-year-old midfielder watched on as we let slip a one-goal lead given to us by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to lose 2-1 to the Ligue 1 outfit with Moussa Dembele scoring a second half double.
It’s not clear why Khedira was in north London today but obviously his presence at the game is only going to fuel rumours of a move to Arsenal but I just don’t see where he’d fit in to Unai Emery’s system.
We’ve only just signed Dani Ceballos on loan to replace Aaron Ramsey so unless someone like Granit Xhaka or Lucas Torreira is set to leave, I don’t believe Arsenal would be in the market for another midfielder who’s coming towards the end of his career.
Khedira is still good enough to demand a big contract and we’re trying to reduce our wage bill, not add to it, so I’d be shocked if anything came of these links with the former Real Madrid star.
The German ace is good friends with Mesut Ozil so the chances are the Arsenal playmaker invited his compatriot to watch the Emirates Cup today and his attendance at the game was totally innocent.
