Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has launched an extraordinary attack on Hans-Joachim Watzke after the Borussia Dortmund chief suggested the striker had joined Arsenal for money.

The Gabon international left Dortmund for Arsenal in January 2018 in what at the time was a club record deal with the striker reportedly signing a lucrative contract worth around £180,000-a-week at the Emirates.

Aubameyang has been a huge success in north London as the 30-year-old has scored 49 goals and provided a further 12 assists in his 73 appearances for Arsenal, including 8 goals in 8 games so far this season.

However, despite his form in front of goal, Aubameyang has been unable to fire Arsenal back into the Champions League and this is something Watzke was keen to point out after suggesting the striker only joined the club for money.

The Dortmund chief is quoted by TeamTalk as saying:

“Of course it is hard to keep a player in the face of such sums. Some go to clubs because of this money, where they have not played Champions League for years.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays great at Arsenal, will probably be warm-hearted when he looks at his bank account, but on Wednesdays, will be saddened when he has to watch the Champions League on television.”

Aubameyang has now launched a scathing reply to Watzke after calling the Dortmund chief a ‘clown’ and suggesting he was the one interested in money when they sold former team-mate Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona.

What a reply from Auba! Fair play to him for sticking up for himself but we don’t want him getting involved in public spats with his former club when he’s in such superb form. The last thing we need is his performance on the pitch being affected by a silly row with Watzke.
