[Ratings & goals] Arsenal 4-0 Liege: Martinelli & Tierney star, Pepe struggles again
Arsenal took control of Group F in the Europa League after easing to a 4-0 victory over Standard Liege last night.
We started brightly and opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Gabriel Martinelli glanced home from a lovely Kieran Tierney cross before the Brazilian curled home his second of the night just a few minutes later.
Joe Willock made it 3-0 to Arsenal with a fine finish before Martinelli set-up Dani Ceballos with a superb cross to put us in total control shortly after half-time. We squandered several chances to add to the score-line during the second half but had to settle for 4-0.
Here are my ratings:
Martinez 6.5/10 | Flapped at a few crosses but made a decent save to deny Gavory and maintain his clean sheet.
Bellerin 6.5/10 | Great to see him back playing 90 minutes. Touch was still a little rusty, which is understandable, but he hasn’t lost his pace and his fitness looked fine.
Mustafi 6.5/10 | Another solid outing from the German. Three games and three clean sheets for him this season.
Holding 6.5/10 | Such a calming presence at the back and went about his business quietly and efficiently. I’d definitely start him on Sunday.
Tierney 8.5/10 | Terrific. Superb crossing all night. Set up the first goal but could have had a couple more assists if our finishing was better. He’s going to be a HUGE addition to the team, no doubt about that.
Torreira 7/10 | Back playing where he belongs in the DM role and looked far more comfortable. He still popped up in the box occasionally but did his job to protect the defence.
Willock 7.5/10 | Another top display from the youngster. Made it 3-0 with a cool finish and was always keen to get involved. Made some great runs and linked up well between the midfield and attack.
Maitland-Niles 6/10 | Played in a more advanced role but struggled to have much of an impact and was overshadowed by his team mates before being subbed in the second half.
Ceballos 8/10 | Grabbed his first goal for the club with a tap in but his all-round performance was excellent. Ran the show at times and used the ball well, moving into space and creating chances. Lovely player to watch when he’s on form.
Nelson 7.5/10 | Great run out and looked far more confident than in previous matches. Caused the Liege defence problems and put in some dangerous crosses.
Martinelli 9/10 | Excellent performance. Beautiful header opened the scoring and another superb finish made it 2-0 shortly after. Set-up Ceballos for our fourth with an exquisite cross. Worked hard and had a couple of half-chances to complete his hat-trick. The kid looks like a special talent.
Subs:
Pepe 5/10 | Looks worryingly low on confidence. Should have come on and enjoyed himself but he looked petrified whenever he got the ball.
Guendouzi 6/10 | Late cameo to see the game out.
Aubameyang N/A | No idea why he was risked for the last ten minutes when we were 4-0 up.
