[Ratings & goals] Vitoria 1-1 Arsenal: Gunners blow lead again – just sack Emery now
Arsenal put in a terrible performance in Portugal as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Vitoria in the Europa League this afternoon.
It was a woeful game with Arsenal dominating possession but doing absolutely nothing with it. Vitoria were looking the more dangerous side but it was Arsenal who somehow broke the deadlock in the 80th minute.
Nicolas Pepe swung in a lovely free-kick and Shkodran Mustafi headed home with our first shot on target. It looked like Arsenal were going to get away with it and somehow bring home three points despite an inept performance.
However, once again we shot ourselves in the foot and threw away a lead. Poor defending from Rob Holding let in a late cross which led to Bruno Duarte scoring a fine equaliser to make it 1-1 in the 91st minute meaning Arsenal had to settle for a point.
Here are my ratings:
Martinez 6/10 | Made a few decent stops in the first half when Vitoria peppered our goal with shots but could have done better to stop the cross for their late goal.
Mustafi 6/10 | Headed home the Arsenal goal but almost scored another own goal in the last minute when he hit clipped post. Shakey performances overall at the back.
Holding 5/10 | Another below par display from Rob. Didn’t look comfortable playing on the left of a back three and should have done much better to stop the cross which led to their equaliser.
Sokratis 5/10 | Given far too much trouble from the Vitoria attack. All over the place at times.
Maitland-Niles 5/10 | Offered absolutely nothing going forward in the right wing-back role. Touch was poor. Passing even worse.
Ceballos 5/10 | Had no real positive influence in getting the ball forward into dangerous areas. Limped off with a hamstring injury.
Willock 5/10 | Struggled to impose himself as Arsenal’s two-man midfield were outnumbered in the first half. Had to play a more defensive role than he’s used to. Subbed.
Tierney 6.5/10 | Arguably Arsenal’s best player – which wasn’t hard. A couple of excellent crosses in the first half and showed plenty of energy.
Pepe 6/10 | Put in a superb free-kick to create our goal but was otherwise a frustrated figure as he had no service and did very little when he did get on the ball.
Martinelli 5/10 | Worked hard but barely had a sniff at goal due to a lack of service as it took Arsenal 80 minutes to have a shot on target.
Saka 5/10 | Disappointing. Got into a good position a few times but his final ball was very poor at times. The attempted pass to put Pepe through was particularly awful. Subbed.
Subs:
Guendouzi 5/10 | Brought a bit more energy to the midfield after replacing Ceballos.
Lacazette 5/10 | No service at all. Barely saw the ball.
Torreira 5/10 | On for the final 15.
Manager
Emery 2/10 | This was a horrendous performance from Arsenal against a very average Vitoria side and it’s clear the players have no clue what Emery wants. He once again changed the system to play a 3-4-3 and it didn’t work at all. To me, it looks like the players have given up on Emery and the board should be acting now. Not letting this mess go on any longer.
Emery isn’t the right man to take Arsenal forward. We have gone backwards in every department since he took over and today’s display typified his time in charge. We need to sack him now and bring in somebody who can get the best out of these players before the season drifts away.
